In Device Manager remove 3 unrecognized things, 1 is Unknown Device and the other two are PCI/USB something something (PCI Universal Serial Bus?). USB 2.0 Controller Mode = HiSpeed (its not possible to adjust this option in this BIOS)īIOS EHCI hand-off = ENABLED (If this would be set to DISABLED then it would always freeze during step #5 below) Here are all my USB settings in BIOS and how I set them: I think I got it (USB mouse+kb) almost working now (there is some mouse acceleration and its very bad).īelow are ALL necessary steps I had to go through after fresh Windows 98SE installation and RLoew RAM patch: Definitely not usable solution though.Īnyways. But keyboard was not working at all and mouse was laggy, you had to like 4-click on icons to open them etc. Yes, that would make sense, but I can only speculate due to my inexperience with these things.īy the way, when I DISABLED "BIOS EHCI hand-off" in BIOS then the USB mouse kinda worked in normal (not safe mode) boot. If you have USB emulation enabled in the BIOS I think this would make sense - the BIOS would be telling Windows 98 that those devices are PS2 or something like that. I am open to any ideas because I can easily re-deploy a fresh installation in under a minute with multi-boot manager. Perhaps the BIOS/mobo has a hand in that? This made me pretty confident that there must be a way to make this permanent, somehow.
the USB mouse and keyboard just work when I boot into a 100% fresh Windows 98SE under Safe Mode. I am running out of options so I just tried whatever I thought I could try.Īlso. I have also tried this ( link) which is for a completely different chipset, it actually installed, but did not help anything regarding USB support. And that Win2k stuff will not load, neither EXE or INF packages, I have tried that just in case. But I am not very familiar with this so I may be looking at the wrong places so I will give it more time and effort.
Thanks, I have yet to inspect this resource fully but so far I only found stuff for 5 series chipset for Win2k+, not to mention P55 wasnt specifically listed there.
Its a real Windows 98 laptop without internet connection or any support from outside.I really doubt that there are no chipset drivers. Problem is I have nothing but only USB stick itself, and its not a modern one.
I'm looking for help to install drivers of a USB stick to my fathers Windows 98 laptop, it does not recognize when I simply put to USB port, I mean the window pop ups alright about "a new hardware detected" but I can't do work installed, because there's two option: "Search automatically (recommended)" and other one "Look for specific location, so you can install what you want" When I choose first one, it gives me nothing but says "windows unable to install" (mind that Windows sees this as Unknown device with yellow question mark) when I choose second option,, hit next and then 3 option comes out: "install from floppy" "windows update" (which is grayed out) "install from CD-ROM" and finally choose a specific location to find the driver.
